In an interview on BBC radio, Professor Mike Hulme, of Britain's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research says approaching climate change head on is completely the wrong approach - “climate change is not going to be solved in our lifetime.” Philip Stott writes that Mike then goes on to argue that it is far better to focus our attention on more local and more regional human problems, such as pollution and poverty, over which we can have a degree of beneficial effects, and, in doing so, we may also ameliorate the climate problem into the bargain. By contrast, if we try to achieve some consolidated global effort to bring climate under human control, then, and I quote, “we are doomed to failure.”
