This post contains a pre-release extract for a new book by Danish economist Bjorn Lomborg in which he singles out New Zealand as a country whose current left-wing Government has committed it to a "zero carbon" economy that is unaffordable and will have no measurably material effect on climate behaviour by the end of the current century: "Given the expected temperature increase by around 2100, this means that New Zealand going net-zero by 2050 will postpone the warning that we expected to see on January 1, 2100, by about three weeks to January 23, 2100."
An important new paper by Dr David Whitehouse for the Global Warming Policy Foundation reveals that 2019 was mostly without sunspots. For a long period, the Sun was spot-free for 90% of the time, making the period of minimum activity at the end of Solar Cycle 24* and the beginning of Cycle 25 one of the deepest solar minima ever observed. Understanding the 11-year solar cycle is important, not just for the science of the Sun, but also for appreciating and predicting its influence on Earth and its climate. This paper discusses some of these issues.
Dr Jay Lehr and Tom Harris post at www.americaoutloud.com: "The climate crusade, promoting a world-wide delusion for which there exists not a shred of physical evidence, is again using children. These children are being used as ‘human shields’ for the evil doers of our day. Today’s crusade is built on fear and brainwashing children, sending them to the front with protest signs."
Emeritus Professor Michael J Kelly, of Cambridge University has a warning: "if one concludes that the 2050 Net-Zero Emissions Economy cannot be achieved on scientific, materials, engineering, planning and financial grounds, it would be appropriate to reset the target to one that can be achieved, even at a stretch. With a changing climate, there may come a day when we need to act, just as we needed a Thames Barrier to prevent London flooding. It will be no excuse then that all the money was invested on projects to mitigate climate change, when the very need to adapt will be proof that the mitigation actions have failed."
Francis Menton, in the US journal 'Manhattan Contrarian' explains why climate change seems to have faded by showing data from the easily-available UAH global lower troposphere record, derived from satellite sensors. That record exists from 1979 to present, shown in the latest chart from UAH going through the end of June 2018.
Economist Bjorn Lomborg writes: "This British parliament declared the other day the planet was facing a 'climate emergency', making the UK the first country to do so after cities such as Los Angeles, London, Vancouver and Basel. It’s a move that sums up all that is wrong with climate policy: politicians are making grandiose, fearmongering declarations that are divorced from economic reality, as well as from what will fix the problem they claim to be addressing. Political rhetoric is cheap but drastic cuts in carbon dioxide emissions remain prohibitively expensive and technologically challenging."
Dr Tim Ball and Tom Harris post at communalnews.com: "Why are the public generally unaware of the important research that connects variations in the output of the Sun with climate change? They should know about it, since the Sun is responsible for far more climate change than anything we cause. The reason for this ignorance is that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate ..."
Professor Will Happer writes at CFact (U.S.): "The good news is that the New York Times has finally permitted its readers to hear that the whole world is greening from more atmospheric CO2. The bad news is that the rest of the article is devoted to demonizing this essential gas, despite the fact that H2O (water) and CO2 are the main building blocks of living things."
Dr Judith Curry's message to ExtInction Rebellion and other doomsters: "Not only do you know nothing about climate change, you also appear to know nothing of history. You are your own worst enemy — you are triggering a global backlash against doing anything sensible about protecting our environment or reducing our vulnerability to extreme weather. You are making young people miserable, who haven’t yet experienced enough of life to place this nonsense in context."
The Irish Climate Science Forum offers a comprehensive 2019 overview of the observed science: "The latest research and observations indicate that while there is an anthropogenic Green‐House Gas (GHG) influence, it is considerably less than depicted by the IPCC. Much more is also now understood about solar and other natural influences, weather events and many physical observations. Objective analysis of the facts points to prudent mitigation action butdoes not indicate a looming climate crisis."
"Seriously, folks, we’re supposed to be seeing all kinds of bad stuff. But none of it has happened. No cities gone underwater. No increase in heat waves or cold waves. No islands sinking into the ocean. No increase in hurricanes. No millions of climate refugees. The tragedies being pushed by the failed serial doomcasters for the last 30 years simply haven’t come to pass." Willis Eschenbach posts at WUWT.
Coalition energy spokesman, Bryan Leyland, has been writing to the newly-established New Zealand Climate Change Commission asking it to provide convincing evidence of dangerous man-made global warming. The Commission's replies that it relies on consensus of scientific institutions has been rejected by Mr Leyland who calls for the Commission to be disbanded.
For copies in sequential order of Mr Leyland's correspondence with the Climate Change Commission:
Christopher Booker writes in the UK Sunday Telegraph: "The 'special report' by the IPCC urging the world to use only renewable energy is pure fantasy". He concludes: "However much those behind this report may delude themselves and try to delude the rest of us, the fact is that the rest of the world is no longer being taken in by their make-believe."
Our Coalition has challenged the country’s premier scientific institution, the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ) about the Society’s unsubstantiated alarmist claims of climate alarmism that have created a rift among scientists in New Zealand.

"President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreeement on climate change because it is a bad deal for America. He could easily have made the decision simply because the science is false. However, most of the American and global...

"A modern, highly efficient, supercritical coal-fired station with stack gas cleanup is very clean indeed, essentially emitting only water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The stack gas cleanup removes virtually all of the sulfur dioxide and the nitrous oxide, the real...
